SBS Export Market Overview (2024-03)

At present, the Chinese SBS market is still in a stalemate and consolidation stage, with a long-short game of cost, supply and demand. May is about to end, and there is still no clear news guidance for SBS.

        In the short term:

First, the butadiene market fluctuates violently, and the guidance is unclear: the spot butadiene market fell rapidly in mid-to-early May, reaching a relative low in the middle of the month, a 5%-6% drop from the beginning of the month. Then, under the influence of some foreign news, the butadiene market began to rebound violently. As of May 22, rebounding by about 5%. The price of butadiene fluctuated violently, and the future trend needs to be continuously monitored. At present, the cost is still high.

Second, the supply continues to be low: In mid-May, the Dushanzi unit was fully shut down for maintenance, and Huizhou Li Changrong is expected to shut down in the short term in the near future. SBS Export Market Overview (2024-02)

Yellowing of Rubber

Rubber yellowing is a manifestation of rubber aging, mainly caused by the following reasons:

  1. Aging reaction: During the use or storage of rubber, it is affected by the action of heat energy, light energy, radiation energy, as well as oxygen, ozone, water and variable metal, which leads to the breakage and cross-linking reaction of rubber molecular chains, and then causes aging, manifested as yellowing, hardening, brittleness and so on.
  2. Ultraviolet radiation: ultraviolet light can cause the cracking of carbon-carbon bonds or carbon-hydrogen bonds in the rubber molecular chain, resulting in a concentration of activity, leading to degradation of the molecular chain, resulting in yellowing.
  3. The role of heat and oxygen: over time, rubber materials will undergo oxidation reactions, and heat will accelerate this process, resulting in material discoloration.
  4. Rubber structure: There is a bond energy between polymer macromolecular chain bonds, and when the energy provided by the outside world is greater than the bond energy, the molecular chain is prone to activity concentration, leading to degradation and yellowing.
  5. Impurities and metal ions: If there are trace metals and impurities such as NO-3 in silicone rubber, it may cause yellowing after secondary vulcanization.

Because rubber aging is an inevitable change, rubber antioxidants are used in the production of rubber products to inhibit the aging of products and extend the service life of products. Rubber antioxidants are divided into physical and chemical antioxidants, and paraffin wax is commonly used as physical antioxidants. This passage mainly introduces how paraffin wax plays an anti-aging effect in rubber products and matters that should be paid attention to.

Paraffin is a white, odorless waxy solid, alkane structure, and it is a mixture of straight chain paraffin, branched paraffin and ring hydrocarbons. The commonly used paraffin wax in rubber is ordinary paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, rubber protective wax. Paraffin wax in rubber is a physical protective agent or softener, which can improve the anti-aging property of rubber and increase the flexibility of rubber. It does not participate in the reaction during vulcanization and is only dissolved in the rubber. When the vulcanization is cooled, it is in a supersaturated state and slowly migrates to the surface of the vulcanized rubber, forming a protective film that insulates against the erosion of oxygen and ozone in the air, thus playing a role in preventing aging.

The solubility of different varieties of paraffin wax in rubber is different, ordinary paraffin wax > rubber protective wax > microcrystalline wax. SBS Export Market Overview (2024-1)
